Barnesandnoble.com Offers Wireless Web Service

FRAMINGHAM (05/02/2000) - Barnesandnoble.com Inc. jumped on the wireless Web bandwagon today with the launch of its On The Go service in collaboration with three national carriers. Barnesandnoble.com said the new service will allow cellular phone users to shop and search for books, music and software as well as easily locate the closest Barnes & Noble Inc. store.

Carl Rosendorf, senior vice president of Barnesandnoble.com in New York, said the new service makes the company "the first multichannel retail brand to provide customers with the wireless technology to find any book, CD or software title."

Amazon.com in Seattle began providing wireless access to its Web site earlier this year in partnership with Sprint PCS Group in Kansas City and Palm Inc. in Santa Clara, California, and added wireless access for users of the Microsoft Corp. Pocket PC with the launch of that device last month.

Barnesandnoble.com said it signed agreements with Sprint PCS, New York-based Verizon Wireless and OmniSky Inc. in Cupertino, California, to provide access to its service. Sprint PCS and Verizon will provide access over their digital phones while OmniSky will provide service for Palm V users.
