TELECOM 99: 3Com's Palm, Symbian to "Cooperate"

3Com Corp.'s Palm Computing Inc. and Symbian Ltd. today announced plans to cooperate and potentially license each other's technology.

The companies did not disclose details of any development work that might result from the agreement, announced in a statement released here today. Palm Computing makes the best-selling line of handheld computers, and Symbian is the developer of the EPOC operating system for intelligent wireless phones and other devices.

Symbian hopes that by adding Palm functionality to Symbian's platform, new devices will be created, said Symbian chief executive officer Colly Myers.

Symbian is a joint venture owned by Japan's Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co. Ltd., Sweden's L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co., Motorola Inc. from the U.S., Finland's Nokia Corp., and the U.K.'s Psion PLC.
