Report: Chinese telecom networks Y2K ready

China's telecom network passed a system-wide Year 2000 test over the weekend without incident and has been declared ready for the turn of the century, according to a report in the Monday edition of the China Daily.

Labelled a "great success" by China Telecom deputy director Leng Rongquan, the test simulated the rollover period from December 31 to January 1, from February 28 to 29 and from February 29 to March 1, said the newspaper.

It involved not only the country's long distance networks but also some intra-provincial networks. In addition, several major users also participated including the State Power Corporation of China, the People's Bank of China, Civil Aviation Administration of China, AT&T, IBM and Cable & Wireless Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd., reported the newspaper.

"We are confident we will be able to smoothly enter the new century without running into any trouble," the newspaper quoted Leng as saying.
