$2 million data centre for Sydney

After 18 months of government negotiation, Sydney has been selected to host a global support centre for data network service provider Equant.

Government investment attraction agency Invest Australia provided Equant with assistance and information about resources in each city in Australia to lure the third global support centre to Australia, following similar centres in London and Atlanta.

As a result, Invest Australia expects Equant to invest around $2 million in the centre, which would create 300 new jobs over three years.

"We ended up selecting Australia for... availability of skills, availability of languages, the overall business environment," said Pill Padfield, vice president for Equant's Asia Pacific integration service division.

The integration-oriented support centre will be based on Elizabeth St in Sydney's CBD, providing 24-hour telephone support to 16 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

With all three centres operating, Padfield said Equant could now provide real time 24x7x365 support to most global businesses, using an Oracle-based Atlas.

He said the Sydney centre would be different from the London and US centres which are network management and security focused.

Initially, Equant staff will provide support in four languages - Bahasa, Cantonese, Mandarin and English - he said. However, the size of the centre and languages spoken would alter according to customer needs, he said.

The data would be stored in "superservers" based in London, he said.
