NTT DoCoMo lifts H1 net profits by 15.6 per cent

NTT Mobile Communications Network (NTT DoCoMo), Japan's largest mobile telephone network operator, has reported higher revenue and profits for the first half of the current fiscal year ended September 30, 1999.

Revenue in the period jumped 20.5 per cent to 1,762.3 billion yen (US$16.78 billion), recurring profit climbed 42.7 percent to 332.5 billion yen and net income was 15.6 percent higher at 178.0 billion yen.

Subscriptions to the company's conventional cellular service climbed 10.3 per cent during the period to 26.4 million customers. DoCoMo said subscriptions to its i-Mode service, which allows users to access e-mail and various interactive services via their cellular handsets, totaled 1.73 million at the end of the period. New pricing plans and handsets will be introduced to reduce churn, said DoCoMo.

Addressing the Year 2000 problem, DoCoMo said it is confident that it has taken adequate measures to ensure it suffers from no related failures. Verification tests were completed at the end of June, other related tests were completed at the end of September and contingency plans were drawn up at the same time. Expenses related to Y2K will total 920 million yen, said the carrier.
