Asia Pacific top of the planet

The Sun-Netscape Alliance yesterday announced that the Asia Pacific region is the company's fastest growing market in terms of internet adoption, IT spending and e-commerce acceptance, according to president and general manager of the Alliance, Mark Tolliver.

"Analysts are predicting that by the year 2003 the Asia Pacific e-commerce market will exceed $32 billion, with Australia and New Zealand leading the pack," Tolliver said.

The company has recently finalised deals with the largest ISP in Japan, Fujitsu Nifty, and several provincial China Telecom ISPs. Tolliver said the company is set to announce similar deals with local organisations over the coming months.

Locally, the Alliance has grown by over 100 per cent over the last year in contrast to European and US markets where the company has expanded at a rate of about 20 to 40 per cent over the same period, Tolliver said.

Tolliver expects the Asia Pacific market to continue as the Alliance's fastest growing region for the next several years due to recovering economies and the aggressive marketing of e-commerce by local businesses.

A raft of new products are set to be released as part of the iPlanet brand including a Strategic Internet Procurement Solution and a Calendar Server delivering extended scheduling capabilities to service providers and enterprise users.

The Sun-Netscape Alliance was formed in March this year after Sun and America Online, which acquired Netscape in November last year, joined forces to offer Web and e-commerce products and services for enterprise customers.
