C&W launches virtual ISP in North America

Cable & Wireless on Wednesday launched its new virtual Internet service provider (VISP) service in North America, enabling a customer to operate as a nationwide ISP under its own name with C&W providing the network and maintenance services.

By using C&W's Tier 1 network, a company can become an ISP without building an ISP infrastructure, the company said. With C&W's service, the VISP can offer branded, customised billing, e-mail and news services, browser, registration, fulfillment and customer service to clients, C&W said in a statement.

C&W did not disclose pricing for the VISP services.

Communications service provider PSINet announced in June that it also plans to offer similar services to corporate customers.

The new virtual Internet service is just one of four new offerings rolled out by C&W in the US this month. Other new services include Managed Firewall Service, a national DSL (digital subscriber line) service, and an IP (Internet protocol) virtual private network, C&W said.
