Sybase shows embedded database products

Sybase yesterday said it would be showing developers a beta version of its new integrated embedded data management products at the Embedded Systems Conference being held in Emeryville, California this week.

The products are a result of a partnership, announced in February, with Wind River Systems. The two companies have been working to improve links between embedded database devices -- such as Internet appliances, industrial controllers, office equipment, set-top boxes and consumer appliances -- and central data repositories.

At the conference, developers will be able to evaluate the first fruits of this partnership. The companies have integrated Sybase's SQL Anywhere - a database for laptops, handhelds, smartphones and intelligent appliances, as well as Sybase's Ultralite deployment technology into Wind River's application development software, which it calls Tornado, and its VxWorks(R) real-time operating system.

The new platform is part of what Sybase is calling its e-Anywhere strategy, designed to help users build and deploy electronic commerce applications for mobile devices. The company is focusing on synchronising and distributing data, locally storing data store for mobile devices, and customising applications.

Sybase's new version of its SQL Anywhere Studio is due in the fourth quarter of this year.
