EMC last week unveiled enhancements to its backup and restore utility for users of Windows NT networks.
The EMC Data Manager (EDM) allows backups to take place directly from disks to tapes, rather than via a server or LAN.
This approach can relieve servers of extra processing and LANs of extra network traffic. EMC has supported these types of backup on Unix for the past two years.
The EDM backup and restore software and hardware can be configured in three ways: EDM Symmetrix Connect, EDM Symmetrix Path and EDM Enterprise Network.
EDM Symmetrix Connect provides serverless and LANless backup from disk to tape for NT and Unix.
EDM Symmetrix Path provides LANless backup and recovery of NT and Unix for data stored on EMC Symmetrix disk subsystems as well as for non-Symmetrix data. EDM Enterprise Network backs up and restores data across NT, NetWare and OS/2 nets.
