Internet service provider EarthLink Network Inc. has signed an agreement to deliver high-speed Internet service nationwide using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access provided by UUNET, a unit of MCI WorldCom Inc.
The EarthLink Sprint DSL service makes EarthLink the first ISP to offer high-speed, Internet access for the consumer market across the country, said Karuna Uppal, an analyst with the Yankee Group in Boston. Other Internet service providers such as America Online Inc. still offer only regional DSL services, she said.
EarthLink, the No. 4 Internet service, plans to offer the service for US$40 to $60 per month, starting in major metropolitan markets in the fourth quarter of this year. Tests have already been conducted in Los Angeles and Boston, with marketing trials planned in Dallas, Minneapolis and Charlotte, North Carolina.
