Lucent Technologies and Ascend Communications on Wednesday detailed plans to make their products interoperable in the voice-over-IP (VOIP) space.
VOIP entails processing voice calls over a company's IP network, for cost savings. The companies plan to ensure interoperability between Lucent's PacketStar Internet Telephony System (ITS) and Ascend's MultiVoice VOIP solution that is based on the MAX family of remote access concentrators and the carrier-class MAX TNT WAN access switch, officials said.
This interoperability will enable development of multi-zone IP telephony networks and increase VOIP traffic, according to the companies. Products will conform to standards such as the iNOW (Interoperability Now) Profile.
Lucent and Ascend will ensure gateway-to-gateway interoperability between PacketStar ITS and Ascend's MAX 6000 and MAX TNT VOIP platforms in Q3, officials said.
Lucent and Ascend are expected to complete their merger by the end of this month, as per an agreement announced in January.
