Novell shipping directory 8.0 Tuesday

Novell announced Wednesday that it will ship its new Novell Directory Services V8 on Tuesday, May 11.

NDS 8, which went into beta testing in mid-March, was designed to extend the directory from the network out to the enterprise. Instead of simply being able to manage components and files with the directory, information technology managers should be able to handle applications, business logic, routers, switches and user profiles.

The new directory will be available for free download to current NetWare 5 users from Novell's Web site. Paul Corriveau, Novell's NDS product marketing manager, said he expects NDS 8 to be bundled in with the next version of NetWare, which he said is slated for release before year's end.

Most of Novell's ideas for managing the network are based on NDS 8. The upgrade to its six-year-old directory has expanded scalability to go from handling hundreds of thousands of objects to more than a billion. That means the directory will be large enough to serve not only network objects, but anything else that is managed across the network -- routers, switches, applications, business logic and user identification.

Directory-based applications, being built by Novell and third-party vendors, will serve to hook various parts of the enterprise -- whether applications or routers -- to the directory, where they will be managed from a single console.

A Novell spokesman said the company will ship at least 10 directory-based applications this year, and third-party vendors are slated to ship several hundred.
