Briefs: IBM Ends Chip Pact With Hitachi

IBM Corp. and Hitachi Data Systems have quietly discontinued an agreement dating back to 1994 under which IBM sold CMOS chips for Hitachi's midrange Pilot mainframes.

Starting next January, Hitachi will develop its own CMOS mainframe chips. The move won't affect software compatibility or short-term hardware upgrades, Hitachi said.

IBM said extra costs associated with the pact played a role in ending the relationship.
