Nortel leads in Layer 3 switches shipped

Bay Networks is still the worldwide leader in the Layer 3 switching market according to research companies, Dataquest and The Dell'Oro Group, but this time under the banner of Nortel Networks.

In Dataquest's Q3 report, Nortel Networks is reported leader in both revenue share and ports shipped for the entire Layer 3 switch market. Dataquest reported figures of 32 per cent and 19 per cent market share for revenues and ports shipped respectively.

In the report from the Dell'Oro Group, Nortel Networks is named as the leader for both units and revenue share in the Layer 3 switch market.

Bay Networks was reported as leader in the Layer 3 routing switch market in the first quarter of calendar year 1988, in a report conducted by Dell'Oro Group.

According to the Dataquest report, Layer 3 switches have continued to perform strongly in Q3 98, growing to a $US188 million market with the total LAN switch marketplace.

According to officials, the Accelar routing switches continue to dominate the Layer 3 market.

"Being named the market leader by two unaffiliated research firms leaves no doubt that our Accelar routing switches have become the de facto standard for Layer 3 switching," Lloyd Carney, executive vice president and general manager, Bay Networks business products group, Nortel said.
