Motorola to lay off 15,000, expects Q2 operating lossMotorola is following Digital's reported 15,000 cut from its worldwide workforce as a result of the Compaq merger.The company announced a restructuring program which will involve cutting 15,000 people from its payroll over the next year and "comprehensive consolidation" of manufacturing facilities. The steps are necessary since second quarter earnings are expected to fall "well below expectations," company executives said.

It's official -- Borland is now Inprise

In case you haven't heard, no more Borland International. The software company that opted to change its name in April of this year is now officially Inprise. The name "Inprise" was chosen to reflect the vendor's intention to focus on the enterprise software market, leaving its traditional roots in the desktop tools business behind.

Mass resignations rock Cabletron

Already rocked by its international management shake-up, Cabletron was recently dealt another massive blow -- this time locally. Managing director Steve Dixon has resigned and is taking five key Cabletron personnel with him to start up an enterprise management consulting and integration company called Full Spectrum.

Report shows 25 per cent of all Australians use InternetNearly a quarter of all Australians aged over 18 accessed the Internet in the 12 months to February this year, a report released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows.

The ABS report -- Use of the Internet by Householders -- also shows Internet use by Australians from home has been doubling every year since 1996.
