Dell, Intel CEOs hope for I/O compromise

Dell Computer CEO Michael Dell and Intel CEO Craig Barrett yesterday said they hope for a compromise in talks about server standards.

Both companies have traditionally been in the Next Generation I/O standard camp, pitting them against vendors that support the Future I/O standard, such as IBM and Compaq Computer. Both specifications would govern how network or storage gear attach to future servers.

"I would have hoped for a compromise six months ago," Dell said during a brief interview at the DirectConnect forum in Austin, Texas. And Barrett said he is hopeful for a "merged solution in I/O." Neither executive could comment as to whether the compromise could occur by this week's Intel Developer Forum.
