Win 98 might be here, but does anyone really care?

By now, Microsoft's long-scheduled release of Windows 98 should finally be out. But when it comes to managing costs, it is Windows NT that has the attention of corporate managers, not Windows 98, thin clients, Unix or Novell's NetWare.

In a recent survey in the US, only about 5 per cent of 102 corporate managers answered "Windows 98" when asked which operating environments will provide the greatest cost benefit over the next year. Compare that with the 41 per cent of managers who cited Windows NT Workstation and 45 per cent who answered Windows NT Server.

Corporations are banking on NT, even though NT 5.0 -- which carries promises of helping with total cost of ownership (TCO) -- won't be available for at least a year, and Windows 98 is here.
