Nortel, LG win Korean HSDPA contract

Nortel and LG teamed up to win a mobile broadband contract from South Korea's KTF.

One of Korea's leading mobile phone service providers has selected Nortel Networks and LG Electronics to supply it with networking hardware needed to run a new ultra high-speed mobile broadband communication service slated for 17 major cities, including Seoul.

KTF plans to launch the initial phase of the service by December, according to a joint news release.

The service will take advantage of a faster 3G (third generation) technology called HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), which is expected to deliver 400K bps (bits per second) to 600K bps in download speeds, with a peak rate of 14.4M bps.

The new network will allow South Korean users to access wireless multimedia services like high-speed music transfers, DVD-quality videos, games, and video conferencing, the companies said.

After the December roll out, KTF will work to extend the broadband wireless service to 45 additional cities by the middle of next year.

The contract win marks an important step in the new business alliance between Nortel and LG. In the middle of last month, the two companies inked an agreement to work together in telecommunications and networking. The KTF deal shows the companies have moved quickly to produce results.
