E-commerce trio on tap from Netscape

Netscape Communications is expected to launch a trio of new electronic commerce offerings this week, sources said.

The new offerings are part of the CommerceXpert Suite. TradingXpert, to sell for $US100,000, aims to help large and midsize businesses, as well as telecommunications companies and Internet service providers, set up online trading communities and manage the transactions with their partners and suppliers, sources said.

"I think that TradingXpert creates the potential for trading communities to grow -- especially as it's going to be marketed through the new (America Online-Sun Microsystems) partnership," said one analyst.

Included in the product are several Web-based electronic data interchange (EDI) forms, such as purchase orders, purchase-order acknowledgments and invoices. The offering would be particularly helpful for companies trying to do online transactions with smaller trading partners that have been shut out of EDI technology because of the expense of setting up such a system, an analyst said.

Also this week, Netscape will release version 2.0 of its ECXpert product, which features more standards support and new scheduling and process management capabilities.

A new ECXpert Enterprise edition will help companies take their enterprise applications and extend them over the Web to their trading partners. The Enterprise edition includes a software development kit. Application programming interfaces can be added to tie into existing Oracle, SAP AG and IBM financial applications.

Pricing information on ECXpert and ECXpert Enterprise was not available at deadline.
