Iron Mountain previews record retention service

Iron Mountain this week rolled out a service it says will help customers manage key records across corporate repositories.

The Iron Mountain Retention Center is a Web-based hosted service that lets organizations manage, monitor and audit their systems and repositories. Iron Mountain says that such a service is necessary because many companies have difficulty implementing retention policies and managing information to meet compliance obligations. The lack of automated controls makes administering retention activities inconsistent and difficult to enforce.

The Retention Center is accessed via Iron Mountain's customer portal. The hosted service is expected to be available in the first quarter of next year.

The company also announced a partnership with Microsoft to collaborate on e-records management. Based on Microsoft's upcoming Office 2007, the companies will build a e-records management package that will let customer apply classification and retention policies to documents and automatically archive SharePoint and Exchange Server records.
