Unisys, NSW Police join forces on digital imagery

Digital "vault" a more secure and time saving tool for investigative work

New South Wales (NSW) Police has inked a three-year, $6 million contract with Unisys Australia for the implementation and maintenance of a digital image management system.

According to NSW Police, approximately one million digital images are taken annually by forensic teams, as well as images and video footage received from the public.

This system, the first of its kind in Australia, will allow the police to protect images as evidence while streamlining the process of managing, sharing and accessing them to save time in criminal investigations.

Under the, Unisys will provide systems integration services and customisation of the software user interface so that the solution allows the police force to meet NSW Police’s security and workflow requirements as defined by the Australian Guidelines for Digital Image Processes.

NSW Police detective superintendent Ken Hughes, says moving to a digital-based imagery management system will save time in the law enforcement process and will help police protect digital images and footage, while enabling them to access and use images more effectively.

“We are investing in the future of the NSW Police force by providing officers with the necessary resources to do their job effectively using modern, smart policing strategies,” Hughes said.

The solution, called the “Shared Imagery Management System”, will run on eight Unisys ES3240L and 24 Unisys ES3215L Enterprise Servers.

The system tracks an image at every step of the process and archives encrypted copies in a digital “vault”, where the hardware locks the images to ensure forensic integrity.
