Telstra CEO David Thodey has announced a shakeup of the company's structure which has seen the creation of two new product units to enable the telco to compete effectively in fixed and mobile markets.
The first, wireless, data, applications and services is headed up by Philip Jones, and the second, PSTN, fixed broadband, BigPond and Media is headed by Justin Milne.
"These new groups will help us focus on opportunities in markets that are most important for Telstra's future, like the 'digital home',” Thodey said in a statement on the new changes.
An International unit, headed by Tarek Robbiati, has also been created and will be responsible for bringing together all of Telstra's Asian assets – which include CSL, Reach, and Telstra's businesses in China - into a single business unit.
"Asia is a very important market for Telstra and the creation of this new unit enables us to take a co-ordinated approach to our performance in one of the world's fast-growing markets," Thodey said.
A new Customer Satisfaction, Simplification & Productivity unit responsible for improving customer service has also been created. Robert Nason, formerly Tabcorp, Managing Director, Wagering at Tabcorp, will lead the business unit from February 2010.
Michael Rocca has been appointed as acting chief operations officer and will manage the company’s recently consolidated network, technology and IT functions.
With the changes, Telstra now has four main groups - customer-facing, product-based business, operations, and corporate support.
The changes also appear to have cost a scalp - Holly Kramer, group managing director, Telstra Product Management, will be leaving to “pursue other opportunities,” according to Thodey.
