A new piece of public artwork has brightened up busy Harris Street in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Ultimo, courtesy of data centre provider Global Switch.
The artwork, by Australian contemporary artist, Peter Hennessey, is a giant plywood root system.
Aptly named ‘Root Level’, it is one of the largest public artworks realised in Australia this year, standing at more than three metres in height and stretching almost 50 metres across the street-level window frontage at Global Switch’s data centre.

Global Switch executive chairman, John Corcoran, said the company wanted to create something that would enliven the streetscape.
“The standard and variety of the entries was tremendous, but ultimately we felt Peter Hennessey’s proposal was visually stunning, an ingenious use of the building façade and also a clever reference to the nature of our business which is essentially growing the ’roots’ of data connection and supporting business growth,” Corcoran said in a statement.
Global Switch was one of five data centre providers chosen earlier this year to service Federal Government agencies while they develop whole-of-government strategies as part of the Gershon Review.
