New telco services for South Australian councils

New services contract a stepping stone to standardisation

South Australian local councils are expected to gain access to new telecommunication services once the existing contract for fixed voice and mobile services expires on 30 June.

According to Local Government Corporate Services (LGCS) — the body responsible for providing non-mandatory buying arrangements for the benefit and use of councils — the new telecommunications service will include Fixed Voice, Mobiles, and Data.

The services will be provided under an initial two-year contract with scope for up to three one-year extensions.

Annually, metropolitan South Australian councils are expected to spend more than $2.2 million on fixed line calls, more than $1 million on mobile calls, excluding data and hardware costs, and more than $1 million on data costs, the LGCS said.

The LGCS currently has more than 300 PDA, XDA and smartphone devices in an overall fleet of more than 3000 mobiles devices. The figure is expected to increase significantly over the term of the contract, the organisation said.

The LGCS said it was considering appointing a single provider for all the three services as well as splitting them in to separate services among separate service providers.

“The Local Government as a market segment wishes to move forward as a collective industry, looking forward to standardisation where ever possible, while still having the ability for specific councils to pursue other technologies,” the organisation said. “To this end this contract will be used as the stepping stone to such a standardisation”

The LGCS is a commercial entity of Local Government in South Australia established to identifying, developing and delivering value-added products and services to local government throughout South Australia.

Its shareholders are the Local Government Association of South Australia and the Local Government Finance Authority of South Australia.
