Telstra workers to strike in Melbourne

Union confirms Melbourne workers will down tools

Melbourne Telstra workers will strike Wednesday morning in opposition to the telco's pay rise offers and a pending decision to axe 900 jobs.

Workers from “back-office departments to street” engineers will down tools at 10AM and march through the city, handing out postcards designated for CEO David Thodey and pamphlets with information on the disputes.

A mass meeting and rally will kick off at 11AM with state regional union members linked by telecommunication landlines.

The march will start from the Victorian Trades Hall Council to Telstra’s Bourke street T-Life Shop where a protest meeting will be held.

Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) communications division Len Cooper said its members are angry about “this discrimination and they are even angrier because of Telstra’s… 900 more job cuts”.

The union said Telstra workers will hand out leaflets to shoppers and the general public “warning them to look before they buy”, and asking for their support by sending a postcard to Thodey.

“The major issue in the dispute is the discriminatory pay increases on offer to workers on the union agreement, compared to workers on an earlier non-union contract, who do the same work,” the union said in a written statement.
