HP tight-lipped on local cuts

Final decisions have not been made on Australian job cuts following global announcement

HP Australia has declined to comment on the number of local staff expected to be shed under recently announced global job cuts.

An HP spokesperson told Computerworld Australia that the company would not be providing geographical locations of the job cuts as final decisions on local cuts had not been made.

The spokesperson added that it had plans to replace approximately 6,000 of those positions to increase sales and delivery services.

“HP will be investing $US1 billion in the next generation of its Enterprise Services business,” the spokesperson said.

“This new era will enhance our clients' experience, provide opportunities to grow the business and increase shareholder value.”

Overnight HP announced it is cutting 9,000 jobs, but also plans to hire 6,000 new workers as part of shift to highly automated data centres that rely less on people with hands-on IT skills and more on those with sales and delivery expertise.
