Video: FetchTV's user interface demoed

iiNet CIO, Greg Bader, shows off the user interface for the forthcoming FetchTV IPTV device

iiNet chief technology officer, Greg Bader, recently showed off the user interface for the upcoming FetchTV Internet protocol television (IPTV) device, which the ISP will be offering outside of regular monthly data quotas.

The FetchTV set-top box is basically an integrated media centre which includes the ability to watch high and standard definition television through three HD tuners and record shows to the device’s 1TB hard disk drive. iiNet customers will have the option to rent the box for $29.95 per month (with a once-off $99 setup fee) or purchase it outright for $399 -- with the service costing an additional $19.95 per month.

The FetchTV Set Top Box (STB) will include three digital tuners, enabling users to recieve all available Free-to-Air digital channels. In addition, suscribers will recieve 14 subscription TV channels, including CNBC Australia, BBC World News, National Geographic, Nat Geo Adventure, Baby TV, Discovery Turbo, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Science, Animal Planet, E! Entertainment Television, MTV Music Television, MTV Classic and MTV Hits.

In addition to those channels, suscribers will have access to six Video on Demand (VOD) libraries, Pay-per-view (PPV) content, as well as access to interactive services featuring social networking applications such as Facebook, Wikipedia and Twitter and games.

Consumers will be offered three different packages for content delivery, which include:

  • A starter package, which requires 3.5Mbps of bandwidth to run and delivers all Standard Definition (SD) linear content, SD and HD VOD content, PPV movies, interactive applications, digital FTA and full PVR functionality;
  • A HD package, which requires 7.5Mbps of bandwidth to run and provides everything in the starter package alongside HD linear channels and 3D content;
  • A "lite" package, which requires at least 1.5Mbps of bandwidth to run and includes only PPV movies, interactive applications and digital FTA channels alongside full PVR functionality.

FetchTV's services are being trailed in Australia by iiNet. Its services will also be available through various Australian ISPs and will be distributed via an unmetered broadband connection. The wholesale IPTV provider is not affiliated with the UK company of the same name.
