Defence spends $180m on ICT contracts

Fujitsu and DiData benefit from ICT reform program

The Department of Defence will spend more than $180 million on two ICT services contracts signed with Dimension Data and Fujitsu.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, Dr Mike Kelly, said in a statement the first contract with Fujitsu would run for three years at a cost of $151.3 million for routine operations services.

Fujitsu will provide services to support Defence's 90,000 desktops around Australia.

In the second contract, Dimension Data secured a $29 million deal to provide network hardware maintenance support for its IT systems.

The two-year deal will see Dimension Data provision maintenance for the department's Information Environment, consolidating multiple contracts that are expected to expire between July and November this year.

The contracts are part of the department's Strategic Reform Program which, according to Parliamentary secretary for Defence support, Mike Kelly, is designed to build "more strategic commercial relationships with the Australian Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry".

Defence recently announced the Sydney-based Global Switch data centre would lead its data consolidation reform.

Defence minister, Senator John Faulkner, upped pressure on his department to ensure success in the Strategic Reform Program, saying it was vital to the department's wider Force 2030 vision.

“To be blunt, while we have already started to build Force 2030 through decisions over the past year, achieving it in its full potential will not be possible without achieving the SRP in all its dimensions," he told and audience at the Defence Senior Leadership Group in Canberra in April.

"Reform will not be easy. We have the opportunity and responsibility to make the SRP a reality. In doing so, we will create the Defence organisation Australia needs to help secure its future."
