RailCorp is to replace its aging asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) data network and move to an Internet Protocol (IP) -based data network.
According to RailCorp, all divisions with the organisation, responsible for the provision of passenger rail services within NSW, rely on the ATM network for their data communication.
The IP based network, referred to as an Operations Critical Data Network (OCDN), will be used to transport administration and operational services and data with the agency.
RailCorp’s Communications and Control Systems Division will be responsible for managing the construction and commissioning of the OCDN, migration of services off ATM and onto the OCDN and decommissioning of the old ATM Network.
The news follows the announcement in June that NSW commuters may have free Internet access under a plan by the State Government to roll out Wi-Fi networks through the state's train network.
In January, RailCorp extended its managed services contract with Fujitsu for an additional two years.
