Oracle partners out in force

Oracle Corp.'s own product news hogged much of the limelight at its OpenWorld conference here this week, but on the show floor an army of smaller exhibitors announced new products and services designed to keep Oracle's software up, running and error-free.

Following are just some of the new products and services on display from Oracle's partners.

-- Storage vendor Network Appliance Inc. announced a joint-service agreement with Oracle Consulting designed to help large companies install a network-attached storage system with their Oracle8i or Oracle 9i database. The service includes consulting during installation, a guide to best practices and help optimizing system performance.

Called the Oracle on NetApp Accelerator Service, it's priced at about US$22,000 including seven days of consulting, and is available now in North America. Large international customers will be serviced on a case-by-case basis in the short-term, with global rollout expected in early 2002, the company said.

Network Appliance was also due to offer a live demonstration of a database working with the new storage protocol Direct Attached File System (DAFS), which it said would be a first in North America.

-- Compuware Corp. of Farmington Hills, Michigan, has extended support to the Oracle9i Application Server for two of its developer products, Compuware OptimalJ, for building J2EE applications, and Compuware DevPartner Java Edition, for fine-tuning Java applications for better performance.

-- BMC Software Inc. said it partnered with Expand Beyond Corp. to codevelop a wireless database management tool that runs on an iPaq, extending BMC's desktop and Web-based products to handheld computers. Code named Freebird, the product combines Expand Beyond's PocketDBA software with BMC's Patrol DBXray, and should allow DBAs (database administrators) to diagnose and fix problems quickly, the companies said.

The product was demonstrated at the show and is slated for worldwide availability in the first half of 2002, when pricing will be announced.

Separately, Expand Beyond announced a new version of Pocket DBA, Version 1.3 Enterprise Edition, for Pocket PC and Palm devices. Also, BMC said it plans to offer in mid-2002 a version of its Patrol management software for Oracle's 9i Application Server.

-- Quest Software Inc. announced that its SharePlex, Foglight and Spotlight products now support the 9i release of Oracle's application server. Its SharePlex and LiveReorg high-availability products are available now for Windows NT and Windows 2000, the company said.

Finally, Quest released a new set of online technical reference tools, dubbed Knowledge Xpert, for Oracle, IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp. databases. Pricing starts at $295 per user.

-- Precise Software Solutions Ltd. launched Precise i3, a suite of application performance management products that the company said can detect the cause of problems across a company's entire IT infrastructure. It aims to help root out the cause of performance issues by providing information about how an infrastructure is performing, where the source of degradation is, and how it can be fixed.

It also unveiled Precise/Savvy for Oracle, another tool for optimizing the performance of applications running against an Oracle database. Precise/Savvy for Oracle is available now; pricing for both products wasn't immediately available.

-- Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) announced that several of its development and infrastructure management products are available for Oracle's 9i Application Server, including Advantage Joe for J2EE, BrightStor Enterprise Backup Agent, CleverPath Portal, and three of its eTrust security management products.

The company was also due to announce a beta release of Unicenter Management for Oracle 9i Application Server, according to a statement.

CA, in Islandia, New York, is at http://www.ca.com/-- ArtinSoft has extended its software migration engine, Freedom, to allow users to upgrade or migrate automatically from Oracle Forms to Java on an Oracle database. The tools are available immediately; pricing will vary based on the complexity and size of the migration project, the company said.

-- Houston's Bradmark Technologies Inc. announced the availability of Norad Online Management, a database management tool that allows a database to be reorganized and restructured without interrupting end users performing online transactions.

It includes a GUI (graphical user interface) that lets database administrators change storage parameters, move tables to new spaces and reorganize indexes while the database stays available, the company said. The product is available online or through its distributors; pricing wasn't immediately available.
