Following the mid-year launch of the first Milestone with Optus, Motorola has staked its claim in the high-end Android handset space with the release of the Milestone 2 today.

The new Milestone (branded “Droid” in the US) runs Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ on a 1Ghz processor and ships the MOTOBLUR application suite for integration with social media services.

Its QWERTY keyboard has larger keys than its predecessor and the device can be used as a 3G mobile hotspot to connect up to five Wi-Fi devices.

Motorola ANZ and South Pacific managing director Timo Brouwer said the device reaffirms Motorola’s commitment to “innovate on Android” and offers consumers the features they want like fast Web browsing, messaging, application downloads and multimedia.

Enhancements over the original Milestone include 720p HD video capture and playback, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and sharing of multimedia files with DLNA compatible devices.

The Milestone 2 has 8GB of internal memory and an 8GB microSD card inbox, which expandable to 32GB for a maximum of 40GB of storage.

The phone’s camera is five megapixels with LED flash and access to the regular Android Market is standard.

Milestone 2 accessories include a car cradle which turns the device into “car mode” with one-touch access to in-car applications, including hands-free calling contacts, music, Internet radio and Google Maps with Navigation.

The multimedia station is a dock that changes the device to desktop mode showing alarm clock and multimedia apps like a slide show of pictures.

Enterprise Exchange support is also included and contacts with Google and Exchange are integrated.

The Motorola Milestone 2 will be available in Australia from December through Vodafone and Optus. Pricing has not yet been announced.
