The Tasmanian Government is set to close one data centre and tender for a new facility as its current setup is over capacity.
Department documents state that the majority of government equipment and data storage is located in small server rooms throughout various agency buildings. It also operates two small data centres, but these are both at capacity.
“The Government has identified a long-term need to move mission critical government data and systems into data centres with a higher level of fault tolerance and power redundancy than are offered by current facilities,” read the documents.
One data centre is located within the Hobart CBD in Bathurst Street, this has two computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, a redundant uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and diesel generator. A second site is located outside the CBD in Salamanca Square, which has a single UPS and no generator.
“Following commissioning of new facilities, the Government intends to discontinue use of the Salamanca data centre and to retain the Bathurst Street data centre as a disaster recovery site,” the documents state. “The Government does not wish to own or manage the new facility.”
The Government’s preference for the new data centre is a multi-tiered environment, which will act as a primary site for agencies to locate their computer, storage and communications equipment.
The tender follows a PC order issued in November by the government for 145 desktops, 65 monitors and 50 laptops.
