CSIRO plans data centre expansion

Consolidation of data underway

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is looking for more data centre resources as it expands its footprint in Canberra.

CSIRO documents state the agency wants to meet the growing needs of the enterprise and scientific community in Australia.

“Information sought through this tender will assist CSIRO to further develop its information management transformation (IMT) strategy to consolidate the various data centres/communication rooms located at CSIRO sites around Australia,” teh documents rread.

The data centre will need a minimum requirement of 500 square metres of usable space.

Where possible virtual servers will be used in preference to physical servers.

The agency currently runs VMware on ESX clusters and systems backup is provided via an enterprise team, IMT Data Storage Management, using CommVault Galaxy v8.0 and tape libraries. Restoration is provided on-demand and availability is limited to the backup schedule.

CSIRO IMT provides an enterprise managed data storage solution using Hitachi Data Systems. Storage is provided in three tiers: fibre channel, SATA and hierarchial storage management (HSM).

It expects to go live with the new facilities by 1 March 2012.
