Three candidates left in NSW data centre reform race

Gresham consortium pulls out last week

The New South Wales data centre government reform is down to three short-listed companies after a consortium led by property investment company, Gresham Partners, withdrew its tender.

The remaining players are Global Switch Property (Australia), Leighton Contractors and Macquarie Capital. Leighton Contractors has teamed up with Springfield Land Corporation while Macquarie Capital and data centre company, Digital Realty Trust, are placing a bid together.

According to tender documents on the NSW Procurement website, Gresham withdrew its bid last week. Another short-listed company, Plenary Group Unit Trust, pulled out of the bidding last year.

The shortlist was whittled down from 17 companies which registered interest in January 2010 after the tender was released.

Data centre reform is one of the eight "People First" programs of the NSW government which will involve acquiring capacity in two dedicated data centres based in Sydney and Illawarra to house the computer systems from 130 existing decentralised government agency data centres throughout NSW.

The project is expected to take 20 years to complete.

The government was also undertaking the reform project to prevent the consumption of some 473GWh of electricity and the associated greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to about 7500 cars for 15 years from 2011.

The data centre project was expected to begin this year after tenders closed on 31 January.
