Mobile phone vendor Sony Ericsson today announced an agreement with Telstra to ship the Xperia neo Android handset on the carriers Next G network, including support for high-definition voice calling.

Running Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ the Xperia neo will be available exclusively on Telstra from July 26 for $0 upfront on the $59 month freedom connect plan.

The Xperia neo features a 3.7-inch multi-touch display with Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine, an eight megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI out and Facebook integration with the music player.

Telstra also offers the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gaming phone and previously offered the Xperia X10 and the X10 Mini.

Last month Telstra switched on HD voice calling between compatible handsets across its mobile network, which promises clearer call quality and better noise suppression.

Telstra’s mobile products director, Andrew Volard, said Xperia neo owners will be among the first to benefit from the clarity of HD voice calling.

“It’s the mobile voice equivalent of switching from standard to high definition TV and delivers crystal clear calls making it easier to chat with mates – even when they’re in crowded or noisy environments,” Volard said.

HD voice calls are automatically made for no extra cost between two HD-compatible handsets.

Sony Ericsson’s head of marketing for Oceania, Tim Barnes, said: “We are excited to team up the most entertaining smartphone with the world’s largest HD voice network from Telstra.”
