NetScout offers probe for SONET nets

NetScout Systems last week unveiled the latest addition to its portfolio of probes, a new device that can help manage performance on high-speed networks.

NetScout says its new nGenius Probe 9300 for POS monitors performance of IP packets traveling over SONET networks. The company says the probe is designed to help manage the network backbone, which could potentially carry up to 80 percent of an enterprise's network traffic. The nGenius Probe 9300 monitors OC-3 and OC-3/12 packets running over SONET WAN links, and is designed with a dual-port configuration that the company says enables users to monitor highly available and redundant packet-over-SONET links.

The probe sits on points of demarcation within a customer network, and passively catches performance data through an optical tap. It uses RMON to collect data, and it can also collect data by tapping standard SNMP MIB information. The nGenius Probe 9300 for POS gives users the ability to see what traffic is traveling across their WAN, where it has come from and how it affects the response time of applications running on the network.

The Probe 9300 for POS can feed information to NetScout's nGenius Real Time Monitor performance management software, as well as other management products, such as Hewlett-Packard Co.'s OpenView network management software.

The nGenius Probe 9300 for POS is available now, with pricing starting at US$30,000 and scaling to $58,000, depending on the probe configuration. It is available in single-port or dual-port, multi-mode or single-mode, and OC-3 or OC-3/12 versions.
