Bureau of Meteorology seeks new solution for data deluge

The new framework will help process geospatial and related non-geospatial data

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has outlined plans to invest in a new integration framework in order to cope with the expanded number of sources producing spatial data.

According to agency documents, the solution will assist with the processing of geospatial and related non-geospatial to support business and system processes.

The need for a new system has been driven by the significant growth of sources produced spatial data over the last few years, which the number expected to grow further in coming years.

“To date the Bureau has implemented numerous bespoke applications to undertake these types of operations, whereas there is now a desire to move towards the use of non-bespoke approaches where it makes good economic sense to do so,” tender documents state.

The new framework must have the ability to input data from a range of specified data sources and formats, perform geospatial and non-geospatial transformations on this data, and output the data to specified destinations and formats.

It will also include suitable management interfaces for the definition of data processes and provide the means to deploy and implement these processes and run on software platforms currently used by the BOM.

The BoM has encouraged the use of open source software for the project, which is scheduled for completion by 31 May.
