Telstra exec to chair Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association

Warwick Bray to replace Optus exec Henry Calvert as chairman of the AMTA board.

A Telstra executive was appointed chairman of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association. AMTA appointed Telstra executive director mobile, Warwick Bray, to head the wireless group’s board.

Bray replaces retiring chairman, Henry Calvert, who is a vice president at Optus. Calvert chaired AMTA for the past two years.

Before joining Telstra, Bray was a partner at McKinsey London. He has also worked for JPMorgan, Dresdner Kelinwort Wasserstein in London and Hewlett Packard in Melbourne.

“As usage and service expectations of consumers rise in an increasingly convergent marketplace, mobility is more than ever a core customer requirement,” Bray said in a statement.

“Mobile industry members must ensure they have the products, services, capacity and systems to meet the rapidly growing demand particularly for mobile data applications and services, such as mobile broadband.

“AMTA firmly believes that industry’s continued investment in infrastructure and technology innovations must be encouraged and fostered by government policies and regulatory frameworks to help ensure that all the benefits of mobile telecommunications and a growing digital economy can be realised by all Australians.”

The appointment comes at a critical time for the wireless industry, with customers accelerating their use of data services. The government plans to auction valuable wireless spectrum known as the Digital Dividend in April next year. The spectrum in question will be relinquished by TV broadcasters after they shut off analog broadcasts at the end of 2014.
