NBN Co has signed a contract with Daly International worth up to $27.7 million to carry out the detailed work of connecting apartments and units to the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Western Australia, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The two-year contract with Daly International has the option of two one-year extensions, with Daly to provide project development services, which includes notifying residents and owners’ corporations about connections, survey, design and construction services.
An agreement has also been reached with Strata Community Australia to allow members and non-members to register buildings scheduled for installation.
The contract comes after NBN Co revealed in October last year that it did not have a uniform strategy of connecting multi-dwelling units (MDUs) to the NBN.
“Every MDU looks different – there is not one method of connecting MDUs and installation methodology evolves rapidly. Therefore, what we do today can change over time because there will be no efficient way of doing this,” Ralph Steffens, chief operating officer at NBN Co, told a Joint Committee on the NBN.
NBN Co has also signed two other MDU contracts – one with Downer EDI for MDUs in NSW, Victoria and the ACT and the other with Universal Communications Group Limited in Tasmania and Sydney.
An NBN Co spokeswoman told Computerworld Australia 347 MDUs have now been connected to the NBN.
This has increased from 189 MDU connections at October last year.
