Sony Xperia SP now available through Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile is now selling the Sony Xperia SP Android phone in Australia

Virgin Mobile is now selling the Sony Xperia SP Android phone in Australia, the company has announced.

The new smartphone is available online and at Virgin Mobile stores across the country.

Announced globally in March, the Xperia SP is the Sony's latest mid-range smartphone. It has an aluminium frame, a 4.6in screen and is 4G capable.

Virgin Mobile will sell the device on five contract plans over 24 months, ranging from a $5 per month handset repayment on the Big Plan $29 ($34 per month), to no handset repayments on the $89 Topless plan.

The hero plan appears to be $0 on the Virgin Big Plan $39. This plan includes $450 worth of calls, SMS and MMS and 1GB of data per month.

The Sony Xperia SP doesn't require any monthly handset repayments on Virgin's $49 and $59 Big Plans.

The highlight of the Xperia SP is a 4.6in 720p HD display with a resolution of 1280x720. The phone also has a "precision-crafted co-moulded aluminium frame".

A transparent panel below the screen displays customisable notifications and users can personalise these notification lights to alert of incoming calls and text messages.

The Xperia SP is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, has 1GB of RAM and includes 8GB of internal memory.

A microSD card allows the memory to be expanded and there's also built-in NFC connectivity and an 8-megapixel camera.

The Xperia SP is available in black, metallic red and metallic white variants globally but Virgin Mobile appears to be selling the black model only.
