Optical transport market down 22 percent in Q1

The optical transport market -- including metro and long-haul DWDM and SONET/SDH -- declined 22 percent between the fourth quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001, according to the latest data from The Dell'Oro Group.

Worldwide revenues in the first quarter were $4.8 billion. Sales of DWDM systems supporting 10G bit/sec transmission rates were down considerably in the first quarter, while unit sales of SONET/SDH multiplexers running at rates below 10G bit/sec increased sequentially, Dell'Oro states.

Nortel Networks Corp. remained the market leader, but its revenues decreased 52 percent sequentially, Dell'Oro states. Lucent Technologies Inc. was No. 2, with a 29 percent growth in quarterly revenue, while Fujitsu Ltd. was No. 3 with 8 percent quarterly growth.

Alcatel SA, Marconi Corp. PLC and Ciena Corp. were next, with sequential revenue growth of 1 percent, 20 percent and 19 percent, respectively.
