Central Queensland University tenders for firewall system

Upgrade needed to improve online and campus security

Central Queensland (CQ) University in Brisbane has issued a tender for a new firewall network to replace its aging system as part of an infrastructure renewal program.

According to tender documents, CQUniversity will be looking to redesign its security architecture with an emphasis on data centre protection. The university has two data centres at its main campus in Rockhampton.

The successful bidder will need to implement hardware and software in line with new security architecture.

Future phases of the firewall project include the rollout of next generation technologies and additional hardware to enable the same design to be used on other campuses.

“While the supply of these items is not required under this tender, a roadmap recommendation showing how the selected product would support or enable this expansion is required along with recommendations on appropriate equipment options,” said tender documents.

CQUniversity’s IT renewal program includes replacement of its network campus routers, video conferencing equipment and storage area network. The refresh program is designed to improve performance and scalability.

The tender deadline closes on 6 August 2013.

In May, the University implemented a new high performance computing (HPC) system to help it store and process big data for healthcare and environmental projects.

The SGI Rackable infrastructure includes 500 processor cores, 4 terabytes of memory and 300 terabytes of disk storage.

One of the projects which will utilise HPC is called HEFRAIL. This looks at the effects of grass cover and erosion on the embankments beside railway tracks in central Queensland.
