Silcar scores NBN contract renewal

Silcar has been awarded several contracts for the NBN

Silcar’s National Broadband Network (NBN) contract has been renewed by NBN Co for work in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.

The contract has been renewed for 12 months for the construction of the fibre optic network from fibre access nodes through streets in the states and territory.

The Australian reported the deal with Silcar was struck shortly before NBN Co went into caretaker mode on Monday, which prevents the government-owned company from signing any major contracts until the federal election has been held.

Silcar has been awarded several contracts for the NBN, including the initial $380 million contract in June 2011 to construct and deliver a passive fibre network covering NSW, Queensland and the ACT.

The company was formerly a 50/50 joint venture between Thiess and Siemans until Thiess took over 100 per cent ownership of Silcar on 29 July.

The renewal of Silcar's contract comes off the back of an announcement that Downer EDI picked up another two-year contract on Tuesday for the NBN rollout in Brisbane and Melbourne.

It was also announced on Tuesday that the embattled Syntheo joint venture between Lend Lease and Service Stream would not have its NBN contracts extended following the completion of its work in progress, expected to be finished by early 2014.
