The Victorian government has made more than 1000 datasets available to the public under its ICT strategy, technology minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said today at the Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards.
Rich-Phillips said 550 of the data sets include geospatial data that identify the geographic location of natural and constructed features and boundaries of Victoria. Data is now available on local government, electoral, urban growth and planning scheme boundaries, as well as rail network, relief contour data and parks and conversation areas, he said.
Opening government data is a key tenant of the Coalition government’s ICT plan in Victoria, Rich-Phillips said.
“Providing more open access to government data will help drive innovation, create new business opportunities and also enable the development of new technologies, new products and new services.”
The Victorian government announced its ICT plan in February. The Coalition has claimed that implementing the plan will result in a 15 per cent cost reduction in the state’s annual $1.5 billion technology spend by the end of 2014. Grantly Mailes, Victoria chief technology advocate, is leading the implementation of the plan.
