Take steps now to stop cyber security 'time bomb': Ovum

Analyst Andrew Kellett advises IT managers to adopt security-as-a-service

A more proactive approach to cyber security, such as understanding threat priorities, is needed in order to stop what an Ovum security analyst has referred to as a "time bomb".

In a new report by Ovum called Security 2014 Trends to Watch, UK-based IT security principal analyst Andrew Kellett warned that organisations need to “fundamentally shift” their approach to security from a static defensive posture to taking positive action before an attack takes place.

To do this, he said that IT managers should understand threat priorities and the actions needed to keep an organisation and its users safe.

“Not every company has the budget or security resources to meet its current protection requirements, let alone the extended use of cloud-based services and the bring-your-own-device [BYOD] driven use of smartphones and tablets by employees,” Kellett said in a statement.

“Therefore, organisations will be forced to consider the practicalities of managed, security-as-service options.”

According to Kellett, the increased use of cloud services, which can sometimes be more vulnerable to attacks, will drive demand for better security.

“Security vendors need to provide a range of products and services that meet the protection needs of both small to medium enterprises [SMEs] and large enterprise clients.”
