The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) has unveiled a smartphone and tablet app called MobileSiteSafety for use by technicians when they are accessing buildings that have mobile base station antennas.
The app, which is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices, includes the location of approximately 14,000 base stations, reports on radio frequency electromagnetic energy (RF EME) levels and base station compliance records.
It also contains safe work tips for technicians and maintenance staff. Members of the public can use the app to access information about EME levels at base stations that are near public areas.

AMTA CEO Chris Althaus said the app uses location-based services to provide users with a map of their closest base station.
“After identifying buildings with antennas, rooftop maintenance staff and other workers can obtain contact details via the app and request a login to view safety drawings showing areas that should not be accessed, such as exclusion zones directly in front of antennas,” he said in a statement.
“This is the mobile equivalent of ‘dial before you dig’.”
According to Althaus, the AMTA developed the app in order to make information about mobile base stations and EME levels more accessible to maintenance workers and the public.
Mobile base station information including technical details, locations, public consultation activities and safety compliance documents can also be found on the Radio Frequency National Site Archive website.
