SonicWall consolidates VPN platforms

SonicWall Inc. is consolidating its low-end IPSec VPN gear onto a single hardware platform called TZ 170 that will come in three models to replace its seven current VPN appliances.

The base model TZ 170 10-Node costs US$500 and support a single VPN tunnel and perform network address translation to a total of 10 local IP addresses. It also can support up to five remote-access VPN client machines, but client software costs extra.

TZ 170 25-Node costs US$700, supports 10 IPSec site-to-site tunnels and NAT for 25 LAN IP addresses. It supports up to 25 remote-access clients, but only one comes included in the base price.

TZ 170 Unrestricted costs US$1,000, supports 10 IPSec site-to-site tunnels and NAT for an unlimited number of LAN devices. It supports up to 25 remote-access clients, but only one comes included in the base price.

The hardware includes a single WAN port, a five-port 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet switch and a work port, which is a separate, secure port for plugging in a computer that is used only for work to keep other home devices from accessing a business VPN link.

These three models will replace Tele 3 TZ and Tele 3 TZX models as well as SOHO 3 10-node, SOHO 3 25-node, SOHO 3 50-node and SOHO 3 Unlimited. These models will be discontinued this quarter.

Two other TELE and SOHO models will remain for their unique features. Tele 3 S3 will be kept to offer customers an appliance that has an analog dial-up failover port if the dedicated Internet access link dies. SOHO TZW will be kept for its support of wireless LAN devices.

The devices come with SonicOS Standard, the vendor's operating system version that comes with a set of wizards to make it simpler to deploy the devices. SonicOS Enhanced is an option that lets customers set more customized security policies and requires more networking knowledge.

The TZ 170 models are available now.
