Mobile devices contributing to storage growth: Seagate

Storage vendor releases two new products that are aimed at mobile users

Mobile devices are fast becoming a big driver in the storage space, according to Seagate.

Senior engineer, Sam Zavaglia, said these days everybody has a mobile device and often more than one.

“Between smartphones and tablets, 1.2 billion devices will ship in 2014,” he said.

“That is data we create and then need to manage.”

With all of these devices and content on them, about 30 per cent of people are prone to lose them.

Zavaglia points out that very few people actually back up their data, which creates headaches for users in the wake of a lost device.

“Everyone would like to have the mobile devices backed up, but the process has to be seamless and simple to use,” he said.

Protecting mobility

With a growing amount of content generated by mobile devices and uploaded to social networks, Seagate has released the Backup Plus Fast external drive in response.

The main draw of the drive is the 4TB of storage, though Zavaglia said portability was also a priority.

“Not only does it have twice the capacity and performance of anything out there, it comes in a small form factor and no external power supply,” he said.

For users that only require 2TB of storage, Seagate has released the Backup Plus Slim, which comes in a smaller form factor than the Fast drive.

With the two new drives comes Seagate’s latest backup software, Dashboard 3.0, which adds mobile device backup.

“It is for people who want to backup and protect their entire digital life,” Zavaglia said

In addition to Facebook backup support from 2.0, the new version of the software backups mobile device directly to the drive.

All content from Android devices is backed up, though only photos and video are stored from iOS devices due to the closed nature of the platform.

Backup Plus Fast and Slim retail for $409 and $189 respectively.
