MCI WorldCom expands Asia presence

MCI WorldCom's Internet division, UUNet Technologies, on Monday capped several weeks of activity in the Asia-Pacific region by announcing that it will coordinate efforts in the area through a new office in Hong Kong.

The company's initial services in the region include operations in Hong Kong, in Japan through a new subsidiary announced there last week, and in Australia through its recently announced acquisition of OzEmail. Over the next 12 months UUNet will expand it service offerings throughout the Asia-Pacific region, company officials said.

Within a month, the company's new subsidiary in Japan, UUNet Japan, will start offering service over a 45Mbit/sec backbone connecting Tokyo and Osaka, and then expand the network to other areas in the country.

In Australia, UUNet will be offering Internet services through its new acquisition, OzEmail. The deal to buy OzEmail closed February 24.

In a related announcement on Monday, UUNet parent corporation MCI WorldCom announced that it has rolled the operations of its Advanced Networks subsidiary, which offers services including Web database hosting, into UUNet. UUNet provides Internet access, remote access and other Web services to customers worldwide.
