St George Bank app lands on Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch

Android app allows bank customers to view their balance, get directions to nearest ATM

St George Bank customers who own a Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch will be able to glance at their device to check their money, following the launch of an Android app called MoneyMeter Gear 2.

MoneyMeter Gear 2 allows customers to view their balance and get directions to the nearest St George ATM or branch.

In addition, St George Bank customers who own a Samsung smartphone will be able to pair the mobile banking app with the smartwatch. For example, if they receive a bank email or SMS on their Samsung phone, deposit and withdrawal details can also be displayed on the watch.

A St George Bank spokesperson said the app has been specifically designed for the Samsung Gear 2 so it’s "Android only at the moment".

MoneyMeter was first launched on the Sony Smartwatch 2 in April 2014.

According to St George Bank's head of mobile, Travis Tyler, the take-up on the Sony device has been “a great success".

“Within our own customer base, we’re seeing the popularity of Android devices continue to increase so it makes absolute sense for us to deliver more capability for customers using this platform. In fact, St George Bank customers are now just as likely to own an Android device as they are an iPhone,” he said in a statement.

Tyler added that the app will be rolled out to the Pebble smartwatch by December 2014. The bank is also “investigating opportunities” to develop an app for the Apple Watch.

In February 2014, Westpac Group general manager Harry Wendt said that the bank was trialling a version of the St George MoneyMeter app for Google Glass and smart watches.

The iPhone version of MoneyMeter app lets users check bank balances multiple times on their iPhones without having to log onto its mobile banking service. It was launched in December 2012.
